Yes! Our processes and procedures are designed to ensure that your items are perfectly cleaned with the environment in mind! We only use phosphate-free detergents and our facility is equipped with state of the art, modern, super high-efficiency washers and dryers that are much more efficient than even the highest-end home washers and dryers. In addition, our facility filters every drop of ‘grey’ water of lint before it returns to the city’s water system.
Environmentally-friendly laundry detergent
There was a consultation 2009 looking to ban the use of phosphates in laundry detergents in the UK. Phosphate has been banned in detergents in many countries and many states across America. However, it did not end up getting banned in the UK , but instead we adopted the same EU law which restricted products to 0.5% phosphate per standard dose of detergent in domestic laundry.
Why is phosphate in laundry detergents a bad thing?
Phosphates have historically been added to laundry detergents to soften water and in turn, enhance the cleaning power of the detergents. However, phosphates are very dangerous for water sources and will pollute the water they are in, including our lakes, reservoirs and rivers. Phosphate pollution has been directly linked with algae blooms, low oxygen levels and fish deaths.
At St George’s Laundry, we don’t believe any pollution to our waterways is an acceptable level and so we are committed to always using phosphate-free laundry detergents.
How else is our Hove launderette environmentally-friendly?
Modern, efficient washing machines and dryers
Our Hove launderette uses state-of-the-art, modern, high-efficiency washers and dryers which are much more efficient than even the best home washers and dryers. Not only do they operate at the most efficient power level needed, they also use the least amount of water possible for each cycle whilst still achieving a superb clean.
We have invested in our equipment because we know it is our responsibility to provide an excellent service without any compromise to our environment.
Removing lint from our grey waste water
‘Grey Water’ is the name given to waste water without fecal contamination. In other words, it is all non-sewage or non-toilet waste water. This includes water from our sinks, washing machines, dishwashers, baths and showers.
Grey waste water is sent back into the water system for filtering, treating and reusing and the water from our washing machines is no exception. We use filters here at the launderette to catch any lint (tiny pieces of material which come loose when clothing is washed) and stop them from going back into the waterways.
Does lint really cause a problem to the waterways?
Whilst any lint found in the water would likely end up removed by the complex water filtration systems, we still think its part of our responsibility to have as little impact on our environment as possible. We want our waste water to be as low-impact as possible as part of our commitment to sustainability.
Eco-friendly laundry deliveries and collections
We do collect and deliver laundry across Brighton & Hove as part of our laundry collection service and there’s no getting around some level of environmental impact there. However, we hope that by offering this service, we are removing the need for multiple journeys to be made by our customers. We also plan our routes very carefully so we do not need to do any unnecessary journeys or routes, limiting our carbon impact.
Is your cleaning service vegan?
We are not certified vegan, however, we are committed to being as eco-friendly as possible. All of our detergents are phosphate-free and we use state of the art, modern, super high-efficiency washers and dryers to keep our impact to a minimum.
